How to transfer your UK Visa to a New Passport

April 2017: You may be able to transfer your UK visa to a new passport when your old passport expires. You must pay a fee if you apply to do this.

How you transfer your visa depends on:

• whether you’re applying in the UK
• what type of visa status you have

You don’t have to transfer your visa - you can carry both your old and new passports when travelling to or from the UK instead.

You’re in the UK

You can’t transfer your visa to your new passport. Instead, you’ll need to apply for a biometric residence permit (BRP).

A BRP is a separate document and will replace the visa you had in your old passport.

How you apply for a BRP depends on your visa status.

You have permission to stay in the UK temporarily (‘leave to remain’)

You can transfer your visa to a BRP by applying for a ‘transfer of conditions’ (TOC).

Use the guidance and the TOC form to apply.

You then should either:

• post your form with the fee (use the address on the form)
• take your form when you apply in person at a premium service centre

You have permission to settle (‘indefinite leave to remain’)

You can transfer your visa to a BRP by applying for a ‘no time limit stamp’ (NTL).

You’re outside the UK

You must apply online to transfer your visa to a new passport.

North Korea

You can’t apply online if you’re applying from North Korea.

Complete the visa transfer form and return it to the visa centre where you applied.

It costs £169 to transfer your visa from an old passport to a new passport.
